i didn't actually see the real early UFCs so i'll take your word on the matter. did the kung fu guys use those weird strikes? or did they just do crapboxing?

this is actually one thing that confuses me about san shou, they use the huge gloves like kickboxing does. you'd think a sport based around traditional chinese arts would make an allowance for the unorthodox hand strikes. -

I've done a few years of Wing Chun and a few months of Tai Chi (at a place which puts up San Shou competitors). I've only ever been told to use palm, fist or elbows so far.

The reason for San Shou not being barenuckle is for safety. I don't know if hitting people with 'phoenix eye' or 'ginger fist' type stuff with the impact concentrated into a few knuckles works or not, but I doubt that it would be much use in MMA gloves either even if it does work.!!RENT SPACE HERE FOR 10 VBUCKS PER LINE PER MONTH!!

The only 'early UFC kung fu' I remember seeing was Jason Delucia. I saw a brief clip of him using some flashy kicks to win a bout, and then he lost on the ground to Royce Gracie. CMA losing against BJJ on the ground is no great secret.
