It goes without saying that it was the best contribution to the thread yet.

First of all, Annatrocity, thanks for the pic...

Second, I wasn't going to post on this thread, but I feel like I owe it to someone...

The ball of the foot roundhouse kick is old school - TKD has it because of it's connection to Shotokan karate. A few old school TKD (not just ITF - I was never ITF) & Shotokan places teach it. It's the way I was taught to roundhouse. It works great against people who tend to cover up - you can blast a kick right between their guard (freaks people out who only train top of the foot kicks). But, I don't think it's as hard a kick as the top of the foot - then again, I always tried to elbow block people that kicked like that right on top of the foot, so that's not a perfect solution, either (I'm not a Muay Thai guy, so I won't talk about shin kicks).

Now for the down side - repeated joint trauma can be debilitating. Having a ball joint that's arthritic and calicified ain't fun, and it makes BJJ that much harder on an old man. I can't sprawl right on it, I can't push off on it, and I can't even sit on the ball of my right foot. Plus, it just hurts. All the time & for no good reason. I'd recommend figuring out another way before you wind up with toes that don't work right, but constantly remind you that they're there.

I learned to kick (round and front) using the ball of my fit. Retarded is indeed the way to describe it, though my instructor didn't have any problems with doing it that way in sparring.
Barring a lot of flexibility, the shin is more practical for most of us and probably a lot more tramautic to your opponent.

    Best line:
But now it became completely natural and it's pretty easy to hit with the ball of your foot, but sucks ass against moving targets like sparring partners.
Guess only wood boards have much to fear from you then.
ProTip: If the above quote is a general answer, it is a generally shitty technique.

kicking with the ball of your foot = retarded.

Go to a kickboxing/muay thai school. Ask them to show you their round kick. A good rear leg round should be your strongest kick, not your wimpiest sissiest tkdiest kick.

Tell me. Why should your rear leg roundhouse be your strongest kick.

because rear leg round = most common.

I mean, I could easily say that x kick or x punch more powerful than y... but I've always tried to keep my roundkick sharp because I throw it very often. more often than my side or back kicks. I would say i throw my foreward/teep kick almost as often.

Then again, that was based off my own likes/dislikes so meh. Kicking with the ball of your foot on a round kick is still sucky though.

I remember having to do that at my 2nd I think TKD test.

Sa Bum Nim: Ok, break the board with a round kick.

Me: Won't that hurt my instep...?

Sa Bum Nim: Just use the ball of your foot.

    Me: Wha?

SBN: Like this *pulls his toes back*.

Me: Wtf... we NEVER learned this in class...

But yeah, you have to practice pulling your toes back and know what angle to kick at (you have to bend your foot in a weird way). My advice: DON'T DO IT. Too hard to learn and pretty pointless.
