You need a different example, Tyson (when he was functional) always had the mental toughness or whatever the hell you're talking about. I doubt he meditated prior to prison. He got all commie, introspective and into eastern crap after that. That's also when he went to **** in the ring.

Atually going nuts and biting Hollyfields ear off in a boxing match because he couldn't handle loosing is an excellent of someone who was mentally weak.

He was being beaten and was unable to find the inner strength to overcome this and like a terrified dog he bit the guy. Mental strength is not only about winning but meeting the ugly things in life with some poise and dignity.

So I think my point with Tyson that he had all the tools physicaly and none of them mentally is an excellent example of someone physically strong and mentaly week.

Someone who has great mental and physical strenght is Randy Couture win or loose he does it with dignity and class.

Shut up about boxing in general and Tyson in particular.
The fact that you're focusing on the end of his career as opposed to all that preceeded it shows you to be a tool.

By the time of the biting Tyson had been to prison, divorced, had his father figure and mother die, been screwed over by those he trusted and probably already filed once for bankruptcy.
Hardly representative. If you were as dumb as Tyson is and went through all of that you wouldn't be able to hold it together either. Regardless of how long you can hold horse stance.

Also, it is often overlooked that drivel like "The Five Rings" and similar works were written after people were done with the raping and pillaging. Musashi was a class A sociopath and "found himself" only after there was no one left to kill.
Such people were tough not because they held lotus but because of their training and testing under stress (and because of something inherent). The rest is rationalization.

Kind of like Rickson's "aura" crap now. You try and superimpose meaning and purpose to your life as you get older, even if it wasn't there to begin with.

Lot's of people go through **** like that and worse and don't melt down like he did. The fact that he was given no mental coping skills is why he all that **** happened to him.

He had everything physicaly going for him, which is why he was a champion by 20 and nothing mentally which is why he was in jail by 26.

Tyson was a money making machine and no one gave a crap about his mental stability or strength, they did nothing nor cared to help him achieve or strngthen hinself in that area.

My point my green haired friend is that there is a side of Martial Arts that addresses that. By ignoring it completely you're cheating yourself.

So just because you're a good martial artist gives you the mental focus to, say, speak in front of large audiences?

I agree with Asia. MA gives you focus but it's not the end-all.

Martial arts won't make you something you aren't.
They, like anything that pushes you, have the potential to help you toward your, uh.. potential.
    That's it.
The rest is self serving bullshit.

My original point wasn't that martial arts gives people amazing mental strength that allows them to achieve their hearts desires.

But they aspired to help people achieve some degree of physical AND mental toughness.

If you can achieve this through religion, philosophy, Oprah or watching hours and hours of Asia Carrera porn that's Great!

The point is that while it's great that MA has started to get away from the bullshido of pure MA enlightenment that was so pervasive. There is still a benefit to some of the thing that are being discarded.
