Mastering Jiu-jitsu - Renzo Gracie
Kodakan Judo - Jigoro Kano

Numerous boxing related books...

theres nothing wrong with books, but they cant be your soul source of instruction.

As for the rest of the FAQ, the mere fact that they offer private lessons screams bullshido, as far as I'm concerned.

Is that common in the states? I've never trained at a gym that offered private lessons for an extra fee.

There's nothing wrong with books, per se. And both books, and instructional videos, are neat supplements to training. But you can't learn to fight by reading any more than you can learn to fight by doing kata.

Oy Vey....

Bullshido=martial techniques or claims that don't really work.

Mcdojo=commecialized water down approach to mass produce martial arts with very little substance.

I believe you're thinking on the Mcdojo side of this.

I asked to see the "head instructors" certificates he had nothing to show for his so called "many years" of being a sifu.

Not to come to his defense but what does that have to do with anything? Most "Sifu's" couldn't produce many things in ways of certificates.

In 2003, I took one private class a week, addded to my 5 - 7 group classes a week.

Can you tell me where you base your statement that all privates are bullshido, as far as you are concerned?

I'm pretty sure if I call my instructor to tell him he is bullshido, he'd be pissed.
