My guess is that you are bringing your hand up to the wrong place. Like I said before, I didn't see even one of those pics with what I would consider proper hand placement. There was one that was close but IMO, still wrong.

If you understand where your hand goes, then it shouldn't be a matter of reaction time. The hand and foot move in coordination. There's really not a variety of places where you can get hit. There's just one good opening. Cover that and your set.

The best counter is a cross while it's being thrown. You'll get to him faster because as you all know the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line(minus wormholes which no serious sanctioning body would allow). If you hit hard enough you may even score a knockdown since he is KUZUSHI(Judoka joke!).

I have seen some Thai fighters sort of square up when they throw them instead of leaning back a bit to avoid a cross. I personally lean back slighty and have a hand up to avoid being hit. However, if you see them square up or not cover up, go to town with the cross.

A lot of Thai fighters/kickboxer feel compelled to throw back their same side arm (if kicking with right leg, throwing back right arm) for balance and some even think this adds a little extra oomf, it doesn't. Keep the hand up in anticipation of a particularly common counter to any kick: the cross.

If you need to throw your arm back to kick head height, then you do not have the necessary balance to kick to the head.

    2. For the most part your foot will be point, however here's something you should try. Right there at your desk, rest your hand somewhere on the bottom third of your shin. Now poiont your foot, feel the striking surface, now bend your foot and really pull it in- feel the differance that makes on your striking surface.

This is very dependant on range.
    don't you do TKD? :sign12:

So here's me about 3 months ago kicking some dude

Notice how my shoulder is covering my face on the side with my outswung hand and my glove from the other side is covering. Disregard the shitty foot placement/not being on the ball of my foot (I was tired =P)

here's a pretty good picture of a thai kick

her guard here isn't as tight as it probably could be, but her foot is turned back nicely and she's up on the ball of her foot, allowing her hips to rotate through and around easily.

Also notice that she's kicking with a slightly bent leg, allowing her to strike with the center of her shin, directing the point of contact towards the front of the target.
