    WTF Taekwondo rule change. Thoughts?

Don't get nasty here or flame. Not all WTF is mcdojang.. so anyway

The WTF has gone through a series of reforms and the new rules will be implemented starting April 2006 when the Madrid Championships take place.

For more specific information, go to www.wtf.org. However, to sum it all up, the biggest and most important changes are as follows:

    1. Gloves are now required.
    2. Punching will now actually be counted ---> Thus, more punching.
    3. The rounds will be shortened ----> To enhance excitement

What do you guys make of this, honestly? These new WTF rules seem similar to kickboxing rules (without the face punching) and Kyokushin rules (without the gear and leg kicks).

Do you think the athletes will use their hand strikes a lot more often at close range? Do you think most guys will start to the keep their hands up more?

Why bother wearing gloves if you aren't face punching?

Hm... good point, mate. But let's disregard that lapse in logic and address the issue. I hope this reform will return set Taekwondo back on track and earn back some of the respect it has lost in the MA world.

    What do you think?

I'll withold judgement until I actually see competition under the new rules. So far, they have not been used in public forums, and instruction on competition under the revised rules has not been passed down to the instructors and coaches across the globe.

In other words, don't talk about it. Show me this new Taekwondo.

I'm sorry, it was a subtle jab. What I meant to say was

TKDers will still look like pussies.

It will be shown... at Madrid. But Pro-Tkd is popular in Korea. It is basically Taekwondo Kickboxing with no gear and full contact.

People in Korea have been clamoring for people to become more exciting, after seeing the huge growth in popularity of MMA and kickboxing fighting.

The Olympic crew is too safety minded, however. So I suppose that's why the gear was kept. But rounds are shorter and punches scored.

we will see how it turns out. but i wanna know what you guys think it willbe like

Because they wear gloves for bodyblows...what's the point?

TKD looks fun, I'd love to play, but it's not going to be taken seriously as a MA in the WTF leagues until they start punching the damn head.

I don't undersatnd the whole UFC , PRIDE hype anyway... I understand MT and Kyokushin is better than TKD... but what are the chances of me having to fight off an attacker who is a kyokushin master?

I think WTF is perhaps the best answer to all of this...I had no idea that it meant more than...well...you know.
