Jet Li gives kung fu films the chop

Actor and kung fu expert Jet Li says he's given up the martial arts genre for more sensitive fare, Shanghai newspapers have reported.

Li told students at the elite Fudan University that the forthcoming film Fearless, the story of Chinese martial arts pioneer Huo Yuanjia, was his last film of the type because he wants to make more philosophical and family-oriented movies, the Youth Daily said.

"I've said more than once that this will be my last martial arts film," the paper quoted Li, 42, as saying.

Li said future projects could include another collaboration with Frenchman Luc Besson, who wrote this summer's Unleashed, in which Li starred with Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins, along with Li's 2001 hit Kiss of the Dragon.

However, Li added that he was in talks about more than 20 Hollywood productions and will "shoot whichever one comes to fruition first".

Li has starred in hit movies such as Cradle 2 the Grave alongside rapper DMX, Romeo Must Die, which co-starred the late R&B singer Aaliyah and Lethal Weapon 4 opposite Mel Gibson.

Jet Li was a Wu Shu martial art world champion.

Fearless is due for release next year.

I thought he'd fallen in with a bunch of budhists. I'm sure I read somewhere that he'd tried to give up his career to become a monk and the abott had told him, he should go on spredding the word of budha by kicking arse cinematically (and incidentally earning shitloads of money) before he does give up all his wealth to the temple and become a monk.

I love all the pro-communist propeganda in shoddy kung-fu films. I find it hillarious.

Naww, Segal could still be going strong in his later career if he didn't gain 100 pounds of booze weight. Thats his own fault. Li could be a Gordon Liu if he wanted to. There are other reasons.
