For the most part, Aikido uses weapons to help teach/understand empty-handed technique. So really, you aren't learning how to use that weapon (in an offensive sense) but rather getting a better understanding on how the empty-handed techniques are supposed to work and feel. This is because Aikido is derived (arguably) from iai/kenjutsu.
