very interesting point and article Onion! I work in the health field and we studied some of the beliefs or rather superstitions that the Africans held that hurt their health. With aids, many believe that it is cured by sleeping with a virgin. Of course many have been told that this is not true but many still hold onto this belief. This leads to a lot of rape, even of small children. Of course we know what the results are.

Actually, at school I was taught to blame the europeans for the problems in Africa.

But frankly, I don´t think those guys needed much help or reason to slaughter each other to begin with.

My old man served in Mozambique, while, in that case, the Portuguese could shoulder much of the blame, the fact that greatest exploiters and killers of Afircanas are OTHER Africans, can't be denied.

That whole tribal thing coupled with a lack of "respect" for life, just causes a breeding ground for war.

I do not know anything about the portuguese intervention in Moçambique, at school I was told much of Africa´s problems come from the continent´s division in countries made by the europeans in the late 1800s, early 1900s, which put many long-term enemy tribes and ethnicities in direct contact with each other. When the europeans left, it all blew up.

As I said, this is what I was told. There may be quite a bit of truth in that, but frankly, you can only blame the evil whites so much. The slaughter and misery continue because africans are killing/exploiting/torturing africans, and there is no way to avoid that fact.

My own personal opinion is that those things continue because many of those clans/tribes/whatever never left the stone age in cultural terms. Look at the atrocities commited in Rwanda: they remind me more of biblical rampages then modern wars.

The lack of education certainly is a factor in some areas, if not most.
Warlords, dictators and the likes, have exploited more and killed more and destroyed more than any "colonials" ever did.

A sad state of affairs indeed.

Any particular reason they hold the gun over their head when they fire?

My god as a military man it almost hurts to see such improper handling of a weapon! Where is the tight shoulder, high firm pistol grip, stockwell?!
I have niether the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manor of which I provide it.
