I am ... finished my first work-out of the day a few minuts ago ... 5AM to around 730AM, 7 days a week. Hit another around lunch and the 3rd (final) work-out of the day some time this evening. Been that way for years ... old habits die hard ... which is a good thing for an old Man like me.

Yet everyone says that diet is the most important thing.
From personal experience, eating a medium steak or a kebab makes a massive difference to putting on a 5K run afterwards.
edit: I mean steak good, kebab bad :)
I voted for the second option. My schedule:
Monday Muay Thai
Tues 5KM run
Wed MT
Thu MT
Fri/Sat/Sun 5K run one of those days
Diet: brown bread+honey+orange jiuce for breakfast, ham+cheese sandwich midday, lunch, another sandwich mid-afternoon, dinner. Main meals are either meat (steak, lamb, some chicken) or pasta, or fish. Fruit after the main meals.
I try to do a steak on an MT night and pasta on a run night.
I down a lightly mixed carbohydrate drink (500ml) after each workout for rehydration and recovery.
I actively seek to punish my body to make it evolve to the next level. We'll see. -
