Go Kan Ryu

This is my first post so Id like to say hi to everyone to start with. I recently heard of a school called "Go Kan Ryu". Does anyone know what this means? Me and a friend have seen a site on it, and it all looks rather fishy, with the founder of the style saying:

"Go-Kan-Ryu Karate is a traditional Japanese style of karate. The style was founded by Robert Sullivan in 1984 in Adelaide, South Australia – Australia."

That sounds like a contradiction to me, but I don't want to sound like a know it all bratt.

Stay away from Go Kan Ryu. Those guys go knocking from door to door to sell martial arts classes. They are McDojo. They are a commercial interest which has piss poor karate being taught. Its rubbish. If you want karate you can't go wrong with Kyokushin. You'll get the hardcore stuff there.

But your style field says you do Shotokan. WHy the change ?

I brang up the GKR topic when someone came knocking at my door. He tried the full con telling me it was $160 dollars insurance but for some stoke of luck could get 50% off, which is the price you would pay anywhere else. I've heard nothing good about this style only people that feel ripped off for sticking with it for to long. There are a lot of GKR schools so trainers may be different. Appantly the founder boasted he would be the first millionare from martial arts.

Hey Hidden Ronin - you lucky you have had such a gentle welcome. Have a look at a few of the older threads (links were posted). Some only a page or two down.

Pro's of GKR:

1: Lots of people.
2: Many people sincerely believe in what they are doing.

Con's of GKR:

1: WAY TOO expesive.
2: Is not effective self defense.
3: Can't even teach their kata properly.
4: The sincere people are deluded as they are misinformed.
5: So its McDojo and Bullshido.
6: Non contact karate.
7: The only karate style with its own hate group on yahoo groups.
8: The teaching is terrible and their "Trainee Instructor" program means your instructor may have had only a few months more training than you from someone with a few months more training than them.
9: The intensity is so low that its not going to be a decent form of exercise unless you are quite unfit.

If you do Shotokan you will laugh your arse off. It amplifies any of the issues and problems Shotokan has with legitimacy, lacks the good sides and adds in whole new sets of problems.

Actually in terms of cardio intensity, it occassionally can be high.

Since it's non contact, I assume that's what you mean by intensity.

Thanks alot for the info, and sorry for missing the other threads about it. Im not thinking of changing, its just a 4th Dan blackbelt who calls himself shian seemed a bit fishy to me, just wanted to check with you guys

ROFL......i never heard of Door to Door MA salesmen.....wow.........Jehova Go Kan Witnesses?

mayne.........Shotokan is like one of the coolest an most powerful forms of Karate, I've never done it but my Dad an Grandad did it. I have seen an felt its Powa..........why u wanna switch from shotokan to Go Kan??

If it ends with "karate" and doesnt start with "kyokushin", stay away imo
