I would have PMed you this, jss, but you have messages turned off. Bleh.
First thing, be careful where you post your thread. The 'Bullshido' section is actually for discussing potentially dodgy schools, rather than asking advice on where to train. Admittedly confusing, as it looks like its just a general MA section. As Phrost puts it:
Anyway, as you've got messages turned off, have to respond in the thread. I'm also in Birmingham, and am planning to go to Gracie Barra myself in December. Its meant to be excellent, going by the two people I know who train there, if a bit pricey - however, it appears that in this instance, you get what you pay for.

There's a muay thai place in Kings Norton, which I would have attended if the training times were different. Its part of Bob Spour's Phraya Pichai organisation, and there is also boxing at the same gym, located on Lifford Lane.
Currently, I mainly train at Warwick Uni, as thats where I study (Zhuan Shu Kuan, judo and giving kempo ju jitsu a go at present...or at least I was until I got injured. Grr.). I presume when you say 'college', you mean it in the English sense of sixth form rather than the American sense of university? As if you're anywhere near Birmingham Uni, you could check out the judo club there, or indeed the muay thai. I don't think you have to be a student at that uni to go train there, as I was planning on checking it out with some friends I have at Brum Uni.
Alternately, you could try PMing TCDD, as I asked him a similar question a while back, and he seemed relatively knowledgeable about the area. So, turn your PMs on, drop TCDD a PM, and he can probably help you out.
yeah, if you can reach Dudley fairly easily - there's a place in the high street called taijutsukwai - the website for it is: www.taijutsukwai.com the instructor is a 10th Dan in almost everything going, called Jim Moclair. Only thing he won't touch with a bargepole is Kick Boxing! Apart from that, he teaches almost everything else.
Including Combat Ki

I agree - a lot of the Combat KI stuff is a bit suspect - hell, some fool sneeks up behind you and kicks you in the nuts - your going DOWN.. simple as that. I ain't paying 5/6 pound a lesson for no bugger to kick me in the nuts thanks!

Hmm - I see mention of "Master Jim Moclair 9th Dan Jujitsu (World Federation of Martial Arts)" here, "Jim Moclair of the British Federation of Martial Arts" here and "Jim Moclair, 9e dan Goju Ryu Okinawa" on Kwoon.info (French sister-site to Cyberkwoon). So, he apparently has qualifications in some form of jujitsu and goju-ryu, according to those external sites. From his own site:
R Sacharnoski appears to be this guy, who also sounds like he has a varied background, here:
Professor. James Moclair is the owner of Tai Jutsu Kwai Martial Arts Centre. He has been teaching martial arts professionally now for over 38 years and is one of the worlds most experienced martial artists. He has achieved many different ranks in martial arts and now holds the title Hanshi which means Past master. Professor. James Moclair does not teach any sport martial arts, all his arts are practical for the street and self-defence. Professor. Moclair currently holds these grades in martial arts:
9th Dan Ju Jutsu
9th Dan Tai Jutsu
9th Dan Goshin Jutsu
9th Dan Atemi Jutsu
8th Dan Ko-Budo
8th Dan Kempo Karate
6th Dan Aiki Jutsu
5th Dan in Traditional Judo
& many other ranks.
Professor. Moclair is known world wide for his success in martial arts. Professor. James Moclair was graded by Dr. R Sacharnoski Soke 10th Dan. Juko Kai International U.S.A, JAPAN, OKINAWA. and is accredited by the Japanese
Dr. Sacharnoski is a martial arts legend and a world famous demonstrator. Some of you have seen him in the movies where he starred with his long-time friend and associate, Ed Parker, the Father of Modern Day Karate in the USA. Or you may have seen him demonstrate in Madison Square Garden for ABC’s Wide World of Sports, or perhaps on the Johnny Carson Show, The Noontime Show in Hollywood, Good Morning America, CNN, The Roy Firestone Show on ESPN Sports Live, or some of the other major networks. Most martial artists know him from the major martial arts publications and magazines which have featured him and his methods for the past 25 plus years. As an inductee into several Black Belt Hall of Fame's, it isn't hard to understand why Dr. Sacharnoski is so highly regarded.
Getting back to Mr Moclair, this sounds great - for a £3 charge:
I wonder if he'd be up for hosting a throwdown? I've been looking for a venue in the Midlands. £3 each would be pretty cheap to book a room for a few hours.
Tai Jutsu Kwai would like to introduce Drop In And Train. This is a new opportunity that has been made available for all Martial Artists. This new class give people the chance to train when they can make it, and allows them to train in what style they like. This give martial artists the opportunity to train if they need specialist equipment like mats or weapons or just to do some stretching. You can ask for advice with techniques that you are getting stuck with.
Every one is welcome to use the Dojo!!! You need not be a member!!! You can be from another club.
On the other hand, don't like the sound of this, although it does state he was cleared of some charges. Then again, perhaps the source is biased, seeing as its a WMFOMA website:
Mr Moclair was the former World coordinator and General Secretary for the W.B.F.O.M.A and resigned from the federation in 1997. Mr Moclair was cleared of fraud charges, but was later ordered to repay the "alleged" misappropriated funds to the W.B.F.O.M.A by the County Court.
I call bullshit on that guys credentials and would need to see menkyo and need lineage documentation. Much of the **** he has got would take more than 38 years to learn and it is vague about school affiliation.
For example........aiki jujutsu...... if it don't say Daito ryu or some such thing, its probably fake.
9th dan in Taijutsu.......could be penis-jutsu
Traditional Judo will be Kodokan, Kosen or a British organization and you will be able to verify unless the obvious is true and it ends up to be bullshit.
Atemi Jujutsu......Atemi is just a word for striking and smells of misusing Japanese.
