    2. Cause (please be as detailed as possible): Quad Accident, head on collision with dirtbike.

    3. Your initial diagnosis: My head hurts.

    4. Medical diagnosis: You split your head open, your toe is fractured. And your sternum is cracked near the top.

    5. Time and place of injury: 2 years ago, in the boonhills.

    6. Sensation during occurrence of injury (including a rating, between 1 and 10 of the pain): 5

    7. What activities may have contributed to the likelihood of this injury? Head on collison with retarded dirtbikers.

    8. Method of treatment: Bed.

    9. Recovery time: About 3 months.

    1. Your most recent injury: Torn Achilles Tendon

    2. Cause (please be as detailed as possible): Bad luck. Cause isn't totally known but likely just had enough pressure on my foot in the wrong way.

    3. Your initial diagnosis: When the achilles ruptures you feel like you got kicked in the heel and it makes an audible popping sound that others can hear. Hard to miss.

    4. Medical diagnosis: Completely severed achilles tendon approximately 3 inches above my heel. The top portion retracted into my calf and the bottom into my heel like a broken rubber band.

    5. Time and place of injury: Stand up sparring End of August 2005.

    6. Sensation during occurrence of injury (including a rating, between 1 and 10 of the pain): About a 5 when it happens although I did fall down. Not alot of pain just sitting down, but walking is hellish (11 or 12).

    7. What activities may have contributed to the likelihood of this injury? Sparring.

    8. Method of treatment: Immediately iced and drove to the ER. Hard cast for 3 days then surgery. The surgery shaved the severed ends smooth and then reconnected them to each other. My foot was immobilized at a downward angle for several weeks after that in a hard cast. The angle is necessary as the tendon is shortened in the surgery and must be restretched through therapy. After the hard cast I had a wrapped splint and crutches for several weeks. Every few hours I had to take the splint off and have someone try and push my foot to where it was flat. Approx one month after the surgery once my foot could bend to flat I was put in a large walking brace and gradually allowed to put weight on it. This lasted for 6 weeks and I was off crutches and allowed to walk with shoes. 6 weeks after that I began working on calf raises and stretching the foot beyond parallel.


    9. Recovery time: I was cleared to gradually resume MA training approx 5 months after the surgery. Full recover will take another 6 months at least.

    10: Current status of injury (including a pain rating between 1 and 10:
    3- I have no feeling on the right side of my foot below the ankle and some residual swelling. Certain kicks are difficult and right over left closed guard is quite painful as it rubs the scar. Every once in a while I get pain and have to sit down but its manageable.

    11. Please state your style of MA (including the style you were practicing when the injury occurred): Kali, MT, BJJ, and TKD. Was injured sparring standup.

    12. Cost:
    ER+Surgery+Anesthesia+Braces+Yoga+Follow up Doctor Visits- approx: $15k plus 2 weeks sick leave from work while on vicodin. I didn't do PT as I was making progress and following docs orders strictly so it wasn't needed. Yoga helped a ton and I wish I could afford to do it more. Insurance covered 100% except the yoga. I was also unable to drive for until the walking boot was off but fortunately live with someone I work with.

    Injury

    1. Your most recent injury: Cervical disk protrusion

    2. Cause (please be as detailed as possible): Randori. Not certain about precisely how, as the pain occurred after stand-up sparring later in the week. Probably during heavy fall.

    3. Your initial diagnosis: No idea.

    4. Medical diagnosis: Cervical disk protrusion of the 3/4 vertebrae.

    5. Time and place of injury: Dojo, early March 2006.

    6. Sensation during occurrence of injury (including a rating, between 1 and 10 of the pain): Searing pain (7) in left arm, tight ache in chest.

    7. What activities may have contributed to the likelihood of this injury? Judo, karate. Spending rest of time hunched over books.

    8. Method of treatment: Rest.

    9. Recovery time: 10 weeks.

    10: Current status of injury (including a pain rating between 1 and 10: A little better. Pain down to 3.

    11. Please state your style of MA (including the style you were practicing when the injury occurred): Background in Goju karate, but Judo at moment.

    12. Cost: ~$500 and counting for medical, plus time off work (counting).

    1. Your most recent injury:
    Broken (“floating”) rib

    2. Cause (please be as detailed as possible):
    Felt something move during open mat at BJJ five days ago, but it seemed to pop back into place immediately afterward. This was followed by mild soreness that gradually dissipated. This morning, during open mat – or whatever we call it – at tai chi, I wound up taking someone down who was stubbornly holding onto my neck. I had him on his back when I felt the first twinge. I began to push his chin away when the pain really set in and I decided that stopping would probably be a good idea.

    3. Your initial diagnosis:
    Displaced, possibly cracked rib.

    4. Medical diagnosis:
    The initial diagnosis was that nothing was broken, but I could have an X-ray if I really wanted one. Although cartilage doesn’t turn up on X-rays, a doctor came down to check me out. The verdict: “yup, it’s broken.” Anti-inflammatories and painkillers were prescribed.

    5. Time and place of injury:
    See above.

    6. Sensation during occurrence of injury (including a rating, between 1 and 10 of the pain):
    I’d give it an initial rating of between six and seven, bearing in mind that I have a pretty high pain threshold.

    7. What activities may have contributed to the likelihood of this injury?
    Working from contorted positions against big, strong opponents.

    8. Method of treatment:
    Rest.

    9. Recovery time:
    According to the doctor, I can train tomorrow, if I want. According to me, that’s a profoundly bad idea. I’m going to take it easy for at least a week or two. And then restrict myself to drilling for the next seven or eight weeks. That sucks, but it will probably be good for me.

    10: Current status of injury (including a pain rating between 1 and 10: The pain has died down to a two or a three if I’m standing or sitting upright, but certain positions bring it screaming back up to at least a six.


    11. Please state your style of MA (including the style you were practicing when the injury occurred): Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan. And no, it wasn’t while practicing the form.

    12. Cost: :
    Free (thanks Canada), but I may wind up forking over $100 or so to have an osteopath check me out. That was my initial preference, but the injury occurred on Saturday morning and the two clinics I know of were closed.

    2. Cause (please be as detailed as possible): Being stacked and compressed violently by my 230 pound opponent in the Absolute division of the 2006 Bluegrass Open

    3. Your initial diagnosis:
    Torn cartilage in my ribcage, maybe broken rib

    4. Medical diagnosis: Initial diagnosis from idiot ER Doctor: a muscle strain. Diagnosis from qualified Sports Medicine Specialist/Orthopedic Surgeon: Massive tearing of cartilage in my ribcage.

    5. Time and place of injury: E.P. Tom Sawyer Building, 4/8/06

    6. Sensation during occurrence of injury (including a rating, between 1 and 10 of the pain): I felt something in my ribcage tear and a rib popped out of place. Trying to be objective, I believe the pain was a 6 or 7. It was without a doubt the most pain I have ever been in in my life.

    7. What activities may have contributed to the likelihood of this injury? Trying to kneebar a chubby 230 pound guy.

    8. Method of treatment: Rest and relaxation, large doses of Lortab

    9. Recovery time: 4-6 weeks

    10: Current status of injury (including a pain rating between 1 and 10:
    -6 with a Lortab, 4 without.

    11. Please state your style of MA (including the style you were practicing when the injury occurred): Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

    12. Cost:
    Not sure for the ER trip. Should be nothing. Sports Doctor was 10 dollar co-pay and 5 bucks for the lortab prescription.

    broke my fukking arm sparring at the gym a few days ago...... sux.

    was cranked out at an ugly Z-saped angle, now its straigt at least.

    have to decide whether to get titanium plate or let it heal naturaly w/ cast.

    broke my other arm sparring in '97 and it healed fully, hopefully this one will be full strentgh again soon. cause i want to fight in sept, will try to train around it and hope for the best. i swear, sometimes i feel like i'm cursed...
