    Herodotus is the only guy that has some beef on him, and he said he ran from Athens to Sparta. Somebody else just jazzed up the legend, I suppose.

    Thanks everyone.

    @garbanzobean

    So then, you should not attempt to run at your maximum heart rate, or over it, right?

    And yeah, I get the part about other muscles being a factor. However, my main question would be, can the heart really recover that fast (in just a day) after an intense session of cardio?

    Triathletes will often do two of the three in the same day, several times a week. You just need to build up to it first, and accept the fact that doing so much cardio will make you look like a skeleton and probably get shin splints and bad knees.

    Well, anybody who runs 26 miles (cumulative throughout their whole life) DESERVES to have their heart explode.

    He was a professional runner. He just happened to run like a billion miles just before those 26 miles.

    the boxer girls that train at my gym run 4-6 miles every day, aswell as doing wind sprints. At least one of them has been doing this for somewhere in the vacinity of 7 years. She is not dead.

    Running is a huge part of Boxing, I run almost everyday.

    ALso, am I the only person here who wishes there was both a "generic replies" button and a "Post in song format"?

    Not even marathon runners do distance work every day. They have at least one day of the week where they run a light warmup. The lighter run stimulates blood to their muscles and is thought to speed recovery from the stresses of prior harder workouts.

    People can AND do interval workouts where they will sprint and get their heartrates up VERY high, but they counterbalance that with a period of lighter activity before doing it again. They might sprint for 30 seconds OR run at a higher pace for 2-3 minutes, then walk or slowly jog.
