Live sparring ending in Texas Dept of public saftey

This is the policy report that resulted in the suspensino of live sparring (referred to here as "boxing" excercies) in state trooper defensive tactics training. This was spurred on by an incident of a cadet dying after an existing concussion recieved additional trauma and was hospitalized, and eventually died.

The head instructor of this program is Erwin ballarta, considered to be one of the most decorated defensive tactics instructors currently active, as well as an early pioneer of full-contact FMA tournaments. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Ballarta

I'll try and post a summary of the report when I get a chance, but a big part of what I'd like to draw out from those with LE expierience is- do you think it is possible to generate a valid defensive tactics skillset within the constraints outlined in this report? If not, do you think that the contact fighting excercies outlined could be implemented in such a way as to significantly requirements suggested? Or are the standards listed here simply unreasonable if we want adqquately prepared troopers?

lets hope that more cops do not die because they were pampered in training, its a damn shame indeed.

Okay so they want to move away from 'toe to toe' boxing and move towards 'scenario based' training. A quick scan and search failed to offer any mention of movement towards MMA rules sparring scenarios, why is this?

just to clarify, the "boxing" sparring actually included groundwork as well (range of submissions were of course limited by the glvoes). And there were seperate isolated wrestling excercises(primarily weapons retention).

So if a cop dies in a gun accident on a training range, are they going to stop shooting firearms unless they need to do so in a real situation?

    What he said...

Actually the Slovak police are going to go trough a huge change in their H2H training system soon, because of late incidents that have shown the total unpreparedness of regular policemen to violent attacks.
Several months ago there was this family argument going on in a house, the neighbors called the cops, and the mad person in the house stabbed and killed the first cop entering with a kitchen knife like a pig. And then stabbed and injured the reinforcement.

If it wouldn't be sad, it would be funny.

What a fucking joke. This is just as bad a stress cards in basic training etc etc. Soon we'll change our flag to match that of France. Pathetic...
