As you remember, my friend at York University here in Toronto, did a study like that, comparing the force of strikes from boxers and MA.
And the strikes were vidoe taped and a radar gun was used to confirm speed and mass displacement.

The was quite some difficulty in correctly evaluating the strikes that were more "energy and impulse" realtes as opposed to those more "momentum and force" related.

These products measures reaction speed to a visual and audible stimuli by the thousandths of a second. It also measures pounds per square inche of power. Very nice.
It comes in a square pad form, focus glove form and kicking shield form.
    It is made by Adepta.

A little side-note: someone used a car analogy way back in the beginning of this thread, saying that a car rolling at 1mph has more force behind it than any punch, but it would not knock you over on impact. Well, if you were to say, attach a rod to the front of the car and the tip of that is what ran into you, you would most definately be hurting (KtK mentioned P.S.I. right off the bat).

They measure peak impact force in lbs and NOT PSI, and that is a GOOD thing, PSI is NOT the ideal measurment for impact.
    I know, I have one :)

I havre to say there are some excellent theoretical explinations of what constitutes power.
Many western arts misinterprate it as locking and or stiffness on impact.
a good punch should be relaxed, producing a kime, or focus of energy THROUGH impact not just at the point of contact. and this should be the point of twisting or rotation of the wrist. This will drive the fist through the body surface and produce and energy wave, a disruption to the organs. This can be delivered with a long range punce, but also short range punch like wing chun punch mentioned earlier. one should also keep the elbow behinh the punch and not allow it to drift out to the side.
But regarding body mass etc... explain how it is one can strike and drop an opponent with this principal whilst stepping backwards??

    doshu,

no strike forward while moving back. you must stop and root or cycle and reverse direction.

going back is acceptable for plucking or pulling.

    peace.
