While that may have been the case 20 yrs. ago, that's not accurate today. Depending on the reconstructive technique used, success rate of ACL surgery is around 90%, and recovery time is generally around 6 months for a pro-athlete, although they will usually stay out the entire season.

I've just had my ACL replaced, and I intend to be back at it in six months. The doc thinks it should be fine, so long as I wear my new $1400 brace.
I had ACL surgery a few years back after an accident in a gymnastics class. With a good rehab program my recovery was rather quick, about 4 months or so.
Looks like you picked a good specialist. You'll be fine if you push "just hard enough"
