    T3h Real Muay Thai?

    Question:

I've heard rumors about a Muay Thai gym opening near me. If its prices are reasonable, I'd want to do it, but I've read threads here about kickboxing places adding its rules set (and thus, claiming to teach it) without the authentic technical base.

So what I'm asking is: What are the signs you're learning genuine Muay Thai at a given school?

I did search, so if there's a succint threadlink I've missed, feel free to school me. OTOH, this sounds like it might make a decent FAQ, too.

If you're doing "fake muay thai" that's basically kickboxing with knees and elbows it's not that different from real muay thai so no big deal.

This is by no means an ironclad guaruntee of quality Muay Thai, but it's nevertheless a good rule of thumb: Find out who they're affiliated with. If they're part of a large, reputable Muay Thai organization, you're probably pretty safe.

Muay Thai does, unfortunately, seem to be becoming a bit of a McDojo art. I've been hearing about more and more schools teaching Western (or worse, cardio) kickboxing and calling it Muay Thai. The good news is that the good Muay Thai schools are still good, and it's usually not hard to tell the difference between the real deal and the fakers. I mean, Muay Thai just plain looks a lot different than Western kickboxing. If you know Muay Thai when you see it (Which isn't hard -- It's pretty distinctive), that right there is a pretty good indicator.

see if the instructors compete or have competed in muay thai. I know my instructors are legit thai fighters because they've fought in the nationals and are mostly undefeated

I think people need to stop jizzing all over the use of elbows. They're useful and all, but they're not gods gift to martial arts like anyone that's heard of muay thai seems to think.
