I just can't imagine the trainer would be strong enough for me, b/c I have a really good grip. However, everybody seems to think that even the trainer is a bitch, but I also don't think most people have very good grips to start with.
I'd definitely start with the #1 for you, though before long you'd want a #2 as well because the #1 will get too easy. I've seen a 17-year old kid close a #1 with no trouble. The average grip out there is 110 pounds, but those with a lot of deadlifting under their belts can easily get a #1.

So, you actually do Zerchers while holding the gripper closed. I like that! I knew some rock climbers that I used to train with out in Colorado who would hold a gripper upside down in each hand and grip a towel slung over a pullup bar and do pullups until their grip gave out. I love that kind of ****!
I got that idea from a strongman buddy of mine. The Diesel Crew has a video of that as well:

    lawdog,
I can't say if the #1 would be too light for you, but I'm pretty sure the trainer would be too light for you. I never did any rock climbing or grip training and my deadlift is held back greatly by my grip, but after a couple of weeks of casual practice, I could close the trainer with either hand for at least 3 reps. shortly after that I finally worked up to three sets of five with it. I would imagine the #1 would be the same for you.

Ironmind also has a couple of "grip trainer helpers" that add 20lbs of resistance to the grippers (just hold one of them along with the gripper), so you don't have to bridge large gaps between the different grippers.

    Maestro Nobones,
Koto sent me a great list of other grip training products from Ironmind (which were also in the catalog that came with my Captains of Crush trainer) that he uses/recommends. I'm going to pick a few of them up when January hits. That will be close to my one year anniversary of this annoying little chore called weight training. A good time to add some focus on my grip training. Of course when the gi classes start at my BJJ school in late November (along with my current CoC workouts), I'll get some good grip warmups until then. :)

People complain about my grip on their gi being hard to break. I built it up with farmer's walks. I took 2 old 5 gallon buckets and filled them with 75lbs of old cement weights. Carried them for 10 minutes at a time. Dropping whenever my grip or heart needed a break. Then right back at it. Don't forget to stretch your hands and forarms though.

Good thinking with the buckets. Sounds like you have one mean supporting grip now :icon_bigg
