A good showing would be enough. You can't win them all. Look at UFC.

Yeah, it's just that making good rules to judge criteria for a good showing would be fairly tough. Rather give them X number of shots, or maybe X number per year. This would also keep guys like Phil Elmore from ever becoming a black belt in any style as you really should have a tiny bit of athleticism to consider yourself a master of a skillset that to a large degree involves athleticism.

It would be even worse if it was found that 'Jean Ribiere' was a made up French-sounding name and he sold Degrees in the culinary arts by mail for $55.

The thing is, when you've got a fight record, you don't need belts full stop.

I'm thinking of cases where it would be an unfair fight, due to aged masters who were excellent teachers due to knowledge and coaching ability (but who could no longer fight), and big size mismatches.

Note: I said Top student, not teacher.

Jean also buckles his seat belt when he drives. He buys new cars with updated air bags and performance handling upgrades to help avoid waywerd drivers. Jean does not want to die in a car wreck.

He trusts the designers of his car because they have tested these things for him. You see, Jean has never been in a car wreck.

and he hopes he never is.

but I did like your analogy. Good schools do have hard black belt tests, bad ones do not.....

Your analogy, on the other hand, is horrible.

This is more correct (and I think Phrost said something like this before anyway):

Jean buys new cars and all that garbage for them, but never leaves his driveway. All he ever does is rev the engine and turn the steering wheel while in his driveway.
