Its only complicated to you.

And the only part of it that takes the time and hurts the most is swinging it. Otherwise you could pick it up and use the two outer sticks and use it like escrimas. Using the center to block and trap. that doesn't take much time at all.
Also its two sided weapon. It can be used to block and hit simulateously. A huge advantage over a one handed weapon.
It never ceases to amaze me how people will make toatly ignorant conjectures about something they only vaguely visualize in their imagination. -
