Has the three-sectional staff actually ever been used in battle or is it just a weapon martial artists thought up because it looks cool?

I can see sickles, pitchforks, flails and staves being used to hurt people throughout history But a thing like that..

Yes it has. Extensively. Not all asian weapons are farm tools. Thats the okinawan history. It has nothing to do with chinese military weapons.

I actually like the three-section staff. It's fun to play with. Do it right and it's painless (for the user, obviously). Do it wrong....well, apparently a lot of people do it wrong.

I actually heard that nunchucku were originally used as a chainsaw. I've even made some to test it out. They worked great! They just have a longer chain.

Nunchaku were and still are rice flails.

They were used to thresh rice from the stalk.

Actually it has more to do with the fact that no other culture that I can think of utilized such a weapon, as such, it's likely quite shitty when actually used.

Just because you can whip it around and look pretty doing your forms doesnt mean it's a good weapon. Sorry.

I have my doubts that yall ever spar with these things.

The 3 sectional staff has advantages. It goes around things. It can trap.

So can a plain old regular flail , in addition to being much better for defense, able to hit harder, and more controllable.

Whereas my Kenjutsu and Fencing experience is admittedly meagre compared to many on this board, I still want to add something here.

When you look at effective weapons of war (such as the ransuer, the bardiche, the voulge, to a lesser extent; various swords) the first thing that strikes me is that they're relatively "easy" to wield.

Not that I'm saying such weapons are easy to master, just that when I look at my Espandon for example, I crap grip it, I can thrust it, make slashes etc, its relatively simple and easy to get to grips with.

In times of war, where soldiers were most definatly needed, it would be nesecary to quickly draught and train them in the method of warfare, so I would have thought that the weapons would need to be...simpler. Sort of, plug and play (use this to hit the guy off the horse, stick this end in the other guy)

Whereas something like a 3SS would take ages to master, and as much as we would often like to think the yeomen of old grew up learning expert to be expert MA's, the truth is that the majority of the army was made up of nobodies. Just like now.
