So, why exactly would someone want to use a complicated, potentially self destructive weapon like that anyway? Why not spend the time learning the simpler (and frankly probably just as/more effective) stick or staff or knife?

Seriously every time I see "numchucks" or 3SS I think - "Man, imagine what you could do with a real weapon!"

Actually you would have to learn the simpler weapons first anyway.

That weapon is vesatile.

But for pete's sake, if you need a teacher (or sparring gear) to keep you from braining yourself with a freakin' stick weapon, is it really worth learning the weapon at all?

If you came out of the womb running, then no. Otherwise you need the gear in order to survive long enough to understand the mechanics of the weapon. Once you do, gear is no longer needed.

Then you have mastery of a weapon that can be two bludgeons , a bludgeon and a flail, two flails, or a long whip.

I just remember hanging out in my Sifu's living room and braining myself with one when I was just starting out. Then I asked him if we HAD to learn how to use it. he thought it was amusing but it took me a couple of hours to see how funny that situation was. That and the chain whip are still two of the weapons I haven't started yet. But that was because I had to step away from MAs for a while.

Someday I'll pick'em up, but for now it's just the basics with those two.

Pretty much the worst weapon ever IMO.

I can't think of an equivilent in any other culture. China seems to have a fascination with creating the most impractical weapons possible.

The 3 section staff is way cool, not as cool as the 9 section staff AKA "the limp noodle" or the 12 section staff aka " the groin clipper", but way cool nevertheless.

Numchucks are much worse. They are almost not even a weapon.

The 3 sectional staff has advantages. It goes around things. It can trap. Personally, I am not trained in the use of the weapon, so I can not comment any further. I have seen it used by someone trained in using it, and I would not discount it in capeable hands.

The Chinese have some weapons that are more dangerous (to the one weilding it) than the 3 sectional, trust me on that.
