No doubt, I didn't take a real well thought-out approach to learning 3SS -- I prefer to think of myself as an "enthusiastic and adventurous young karateka" rather than a "dumbass," but perhaps those are two sides of the same coin.
But for pete's sake, if you need a teacher (or sparring gear) to keep you from braining yourself with a freakin' stick weapon, is it really worth learning the weapon at all?
Having said that, if you, KFDW, or anyone else enjoys working with 3SS and becomes proficient with it, more power to you. No skin off my nose.Last edited by G.R. Bug; 10/12/2005 9:27pm at .

I know a few instructors that are beast with that weapon. They can whip it around fast enough to do damage and I've never witnessed them coming close to hurting themselves.
It takes a lot of practice and it's very good for show. Of course, if you're looking for a practical weapon this isn't it since one is unlikely to be carrying a 3SS when jumped in a dark alleyway. ;) -

So, why exactly would someone want to use a complicated, potentially self destructive weapon like that anyway? Why not spend the time learning the simpler (and frankly probably just as/more effective) stick or staff or knife?
Seriously every time I see "numchucks" or 3SS I think - "Man, imagine what you could do with a real weapon!" -

No way. That was classic. Anyway, somewhere I have a video of Bruce Lee using a 3SS in a tournament, and him and his opponent are in some heavy sparring gear. Can't remember what the other guy is using, but Bruce whips his ass with some crazy high flying ****. Then again, it's Bruce Lee.
