If a group of people were waiting to ambush him with knives, I doubt he would have faired much better even if he had a gun. You still have to recognise the threat and draw your weapon before you can use it and it sounds like they jumped and stabbed him right when he entered the room. His only hope would have been to walk around with an AK-47 and just start wasting people upon entering any building. It's the only way to be sure, but I doubt he'd get invited to many more parties.

I would guess it went something like this: Swaggering assholes go into bar. Assholes try and cause trouble. Murray doesnt take their crap.Assholes get thrown out.Assholes cant take being stood up to and, knowing they wouldnt stand a chance in any fair fight, wait outside with knives and jump murray as he leaves.

Perhaps, he should've gotten some instruction from Systema instructor, Arkadiy Stepankovskiy, on how to handle such attacks? ....Oops, sorry. I had forgotten he got killed in such an attack. You can kind of see why :gay: -> http://22.214.171.124/catalog/video/clips/New-York.wmv

Simple fact of life:
People with knives want to cut you to pieces..
You should consider yourself as good as dead...
Run like you have never ran before.
Face them because you are tired of living.
Wrap your jacket around your arm if you have time and still be aware that you are gonna be Sushi pretty soon.
Pledge for mercy and cry for your mother so they might feel pitty on you..

I can only hope that all involved make a full recovery. Hopefully everyone who has read the article will get a reality check from it. Shows better than anything else I can think of that there's a whole world of difference between taking a knife in the dojo and in a situation where someone is willing to do whatever it takes to injure/kill you with it.
All BS needs to be put aside when thinking about this. Simple fact is it doesn't matter how good/strong/fast or what style etc you are, if you dont see the attack coming your in trouble! If that attack happens to consist of 3 guys armed with knifes then your in the sh1t. Unless the attackers are totally inept I can see few exceptions to this. I've always been taught that if you face a knife expect to be cut!! Multiple knives = multiple cuts. Goes without saying you avoid at all costs unless impossible to do so in which case try and escape and/or find a weapon of your own and be prepared to fight for your life! Moral is I guess always be aware of potential danger, expect the worst and be pleasantly suprised if it doesn't happen.

When you talk about street vs. sport, i think an incident such as this proves once again that when weapons are involved, all bets are off. Why are so many of us hesitant to admit that weapons are great equalizers? Is it because it makes most of our training irrelevent?
