    McDojo Review: Degerberg Academy (DAMA)

In the interest of seeing what other schools are available, I checked out the Degerberg Academy (DAMA). Google it, it's easy to find and see what's available.

When I spoke to the woman on the phone to arrange for an intro lesson and a "month of classes for $20", I mentioned that I'd had 3 years of experience in boxing and kickboxing, and other experience in other martial arts.

When I showed up for the intro lesson, I said the same thing: 3 years in martial arts.

After putting on a starchy white gi and getting a brief tour of the facilities, I was lead into a small room, where I was taught "attention", "fighting stance", and "ready stance." I was then taught a jab, a cross, and a snap kick.

(i repeat, 3 YEARS OF MA)

I was asked to kiai with each strike and with each transition from stance to stance.

Then we got down to "Talking turkey": Tuition, fees, etc. I ask those who may be standing up to sit down.

That $20 for "a month of classes?" 2 classes a WEEK for the month. Not two days a week of classes, two CLASSES. One hour apiece, so eight hours in a month to determine if I liked the school and it's huge, diverse curriculum. That was misleading, right there.....

....until I found out that's the par for the course.

Assuming no "student discount ($10 off a month)" or some "back-to-school promotion" they were running, the tuition is the following:

2 classes a week.... for 150 DOLLARS A MONTH And if you want to take more classes a week? An extra $20 a month per class per week, so 3 classes/hours a week would be $170 a month, 4 classes/hours a week would be $190.... you get the idea.

At the base rate, that comes out to $20 per class.

"Oh, but we don't charge for belt testing, most other places do."

That $150 a month rate? It only lasts for 6 months, then you have to renew. If you pay the 6 months up front, you get 20% off. And if you don't sign up the day you have your intro lesson? $95 membership fee. They're basically asking $1800 a year from you, plus fees and equipment.

I make no claims to the quality of the classes, only to the nature of their fee structure. Fred Degerberg seems like a world-class martial artist and a stand-up guy, but he doesn't teach the classes.

$150 a month for unlimited training would be somewhat reasonable. For 8 hours a month? HELL NO.

    Props for looking about.

Are you going to do the 20$ month to check the quality of their classes as well or are you disgusted enough by their pricing to call it a day/week/whatever?

I'm pretty disgusted as it is. I can't believe a school so confident in their curriculum would try to restrict someone so badly from getting as much of an experience as possible. This was to the point that they needed to know what specific classes I was coming during the week, rather than letting me have a more free-form approach.

Who would have thought that a place with the word 'burger' in the name would be a McDojo?
Mauro: Coming into the ring now is Giant Silva. 7 foot 2, 385 lbs, making his debut in Pride.
Bas: Wow, that is one big guy!
Mauro: He must have an enormous Johnson!
    Bas: Ur…I suppose.
Mauro: What are his keys to victory here in the Pride ring tonight?
Bas: Well I think he needs to use his reach, avoid Heaths takedowns, and try to use his size to overpower him.
Mauro: I mean, imagine the size of that thing!
Bas: Now Heath is coming into the ring…
Mauro: Do women really like them that big? Doesn’t it hurt?
    Bas: I really wouldn’t know.
Mauro: I’m starting to feel a little insecure.
Bas: Let’s just talk about the fight.
Mauro: You’re right, el Basito. What are Heaths keys to winning here tonight. What does he have to do? What are his strategies for emerging victorious here in the Saitama Super Arena tonight?
    Bas: Well, the first thing…
Mauro: My wife says she doesn’t like them too big, that it’s all about how you use it.
Bas: That’s not what she told me.

This seems a little unlikely to be honest... seems to me like has has only done a few of these, and then added the rest to look good, possibly attended a few random seminars etc... magazines... There is just to many styles there to have an indepth knowledge of....

With over 50 years as he claims, it wouldn't be entirely impossible. But it could be one of those jack of all trades, master of none kind of deals.

At the school, he is listed as a yodan in Judo, and had a number of high ranks under some certification for kickboxing and muay thai.

Again, I'm making no claims as to the quality of the instruction.

Yeah yeah, but damn 150, you'd think he'd be a Gracie charging that much. I don't think they even charge that much.

Have they called you or tried to reach you for some sort of follow up?

He should just make himself grandmaster of his own style and be done with it.

    Berg-fu-do sounds about right.
