so Chi-na equates to "grappling"? I suppose but it's not what most people would call grappling.

I don't recall any grappling at all in the art. I even went to check the place out in 2001 when i returned home from the military. I asked about ground fighting, now that MMA has burst onto the scene and revealed the weakness of TMA's that most grapplers have known all along. No grappling, and the fees were up to around $90 a month. I pay just over that for BJJ and Muay Thai, without goofy bowing and ridiculous legends.

If Shou Shu' has all the elements of stand-up and ground fighting, why does Tosh Cook, a confessed Shou Shu' fighter, also study BJJ? I've seen him on other boards saying how his stand up is all Shou Shu'. If mantis = grapple, then he should be the complete package with no BJJ. And for the what it's worth, his stand up looks nothing like Shou Shu', if you have seen him fight.

Mantis is 4th degree black belt material. Shifu Cook is only a 2nd degree.

This type of curriculum is why I left my old Karate school. What is so difficult about grappling that it has to be taught at Black belt level? Why is it that Shoot fighting and current MMA schools have no problem teaching striking and grappling in the same curriculum.

I agree. Grappling has to be the oldest fighting art, no matter what claims anyone wants to make. It's easy to learn, but hard to master. Nonetheless, it should not be held off until 8-10 years of training are completed.

Hey trfcrugby, whats your name? What school did you go to? And Sirc.. what school did you go to that you sparred against 3 black belts and a brown belt? Do you remember their names? Armor wearing brown belt???

In regards to your question on the Shou Shu website-
We don't teach grappling, not sure who gave you info on a mantis element of the art that contains grappling...
One of the animals taught is mantis, its the 4th degree of black, I can't say much on it because i'm a 1st degree working on my 2nd.
