I've actually known a GKR 2nd degree black belt during my foray down under.
A nice enough bloke, but a 2nd degree at 17..highly suspect.

Try to find a Judo club, Judo is great for kids. They'll play games and be more active, and safer for that matter as well.

I will I went to one about 6years ago they offered 1st 4 lessons for free before any payment I do wish I had taken it up more than one lesson.I saw one of the trainers on the news some time back training with a blind judo champion.He was a champion against people who could see, a interesting story.

Go Kan Ryu, aka GKR. I could write volumes on this group. But for your ease of mind I'll stick to the basics.

I used to be heavily involved in the Karate scene here in Australia a fews years back (well, in Queensland at least). As a result I learnt a few things about the various groups/organisations that exist, and GKR was definately a group that wasn't short on controversy.

A lot of people pick on GKR because of the tremendous amounts of money they make, the founder is a multi-millionare, pure-and-simple. Myself and many other respected personalities in the Martial Arts pick on GKR for the incredibly low standard of Karate the group as a whole teach.

Because GKR is so large the standard of Karate is very unregulated. The end result are laughable practitioners as far as skill level is concerned. Rankings are very easy to obtain, it's not uncommon to reach black belt within 12 months. Every organised martial arts body (and I literally mean EVERY) refuse to let the GKR group join their ranks. The only group that deals with GKR is the World All-Styles Association (WASO, these are the same guys who run National All-Styles AKA - NAS). Although the only reason GKR is allowed in is because they pay WASO a truckload of money (which they unfortunately have a lot of). WASO only runs tournaments, it's not actually a governing body.

GKR, as far the majority of the respected martial arts community is concerned, is a joke and a outright disgrace. They have a lot of money and a lot of VERY gullible people in their ranks, but a joke's a joke no matter what angle you look at it from.
