Yeah the history was kind of shakey but i never really bought into all that crap. i basically looked around my area for the best training i could find at the time and Shaolin-do had the best instruction. Now this area (Northern Kentucky) is chalked full of good schools in other arts even though I'm not longer there (personal reasons) it was overall still a pretty good experience. I think if you take any art too seriously you're fooling yourself.

But you know, I have had a lot of friends that have studied SLD. I mean, some aren't too bad and some are really decent. It is just their history is so sketchy

Agreed. But again I think if you understand that this system is really about the health aspects of Shaolin, and also some pretty good fighting applications, you will do well with the system. The great thing about Shaolin do is you never stop learning something new so you're always pushing yourself. Now the problem with that is, you're always learning something new and there is never anytime to go back and understand the applications behind. I liked that for a while but the further i got along the harder it was for me to continue. Could you defend yourself using what Shaolin do teaches, I think you can to and extent. Again no ground game whatsoever in the 12 years i was there so you're not complete in all ranges. But the striking is good and you definitley develop some serious endurance. You just have to be realistic with what you're learning there.

I would disagree that therer is some pretty good fighting applications. The guys I know are athletic and would be good no matter what. But, most traditional systems are that way anyway. Sparring and repitition are the keys. So I guess if you pick a few and constantly practice those for self defense or fighting, then that is the answer. But a lot of SLD people I have met also know a bunch of forms and cannnot spar. But if they enjoy it, then who cares.

It is a fact though, that the The's are pulling a fast one over on people. Things do not link up at all! But once again, the guys I know KNOW that and they don't care! So , it's whatever

As long as they enjoy it for what it is, no one has a problem with it, right? It's when they start enjoying forms and thinking that they are prepared to fight because of it that the issues arise.
"Reason is a choice. Wishes and whims are not facts, nor are they a means to discovering them. Reason is our only way to grasping reality -- it's our basic tool of survival. We are free to evade the effort of thinking, to reject reason, but we are not free to avoid the penalty of the abyss we refuse to see."

You're exactly right and that's why i left. Forms are forms but trying to translate that crap to real combat is something else. That was a rude awakening for me......
