    Lindland dumped

Local fighter Lindland dumped by UFC
Former Olympian claims that he was promised a title fight
By JASON VONDERSMITH Issue date: Fri, Sep 2, 2005
    The Tribune
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt Lindland has been released from his contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, despite being promised a title fight, he says.

“I don’t understand it,” says Lindland, the former Olympic wrestler from Gladstone who is 15-3 in mixed martial arts. He beat Joe Doerksen in Las Vegas last month, earning $30,000. He says he had two fights left on his contract and each would have paid him $90,000 had he won.

UFC President Dana White declined to comment about “contract issues.” But he wouldn’t rule out Lindland fighting in the UFC again. “I never say never anymore,” he says. “I don’t dislike Matt at all.”

Lindland, who lives in Eagle Creek, started the nationally acclaimed Team Quest Fight Club in Gresham with partner Randy Couture. Whereas Couture has won titles and been heralded as the UFC’s all-time great, Lindland feels he has not received ample opportunity in the fighting organization. He finally signed a contract and has kept winning, but some fans find his wrestling style boring, and insiders say the UFC doesn’t consider his demeanor and looks promotable.

Lindland, 35, says the UFC had promised him a shot at middleweight champ Rich Franklin if he beat Doerksen. But Lindland apparently tweaked the UFC too much before and after the Doerksen fight. He showed up at the weigh-in wearing a “sportsbook.com” T-shirt. The UFC prohibits fighters from promoting online gambling sites that set UFC lines. Lindland claims the rule merely stipulates he can’t promote the Web site at a fight. “I wore it at the weigh-in,” he says.

After the match, Lindland commented on a promotional video shoot that he welcomed the title shot against Franklin and razzed him about being “a big TV star” on the UFC’s “Ultimate Fighter 2” reality series.

When ring commentator Joe Rogan made a comment about Lindland’s purported weak punching, Lindland responded, asking Rogan to take his punch and tell people how it felt. Lindland says he was bantering with Rogan, the way Muhammad Ali used to tease Howard Cosell. But the post-fight display was described as awkward and uncomfortable.

“The UFC has forced me to create some kind of persona, some interest,” Lindland says. “Fighting alone hasn’t got me a title shot and I’ve beaten everybody. I know my comments have twisted people the wrong way.”

As far as being boring in the ring, Lindland says he simply wants to win. He could stand and take punches and take chances with other moves, he says, but he relies on what he knows best.

White says the much anticipated rubber match between Couture and light-heavyweight champ Chuck Liddell probably will take place Feb. 4, the night before the Super Bowl. The UFC plans to sign another three-fight deal with Couture, 42, who pocketed $225,000 after beating Mike Van Arsdale last month. “They put the fight off, they risk losing the momentum,” says Couture, who got knocked out by Liddell in April. “Everybody’s talking about that fight.”

The next Sportfight, which Lindland and Couture promote, will be Sept. 16 at the Rose Garden. Eleven fights currently are on the card, Lindland says. … Chael Sonnen, a fighter and promoter who wrestled at West Linn High and the University of Oregon, has been signed by the UFC. He makes his debut Oct. 7 in Connecticut.

I amusingly recall Dana saying in a post-event press conference Lindland would get a title shot after the next event.
    Lindland = yawn.

As a UFC fan, I stand behind every decision he makes.

He's taken a UFC that struggled to fill 1000 seat arenas and made it into a UFC making 2 million dollar gates, selling 13,000 tickets, and getting millions of viewers on TV.

There's a method behind his madness.

He's getting rid of too many fighters. There is a huge gap between the people coming in from TUF and the current champs in terms of skill. Unfortunately, he is giving anyone who is still signed fights with the new guys from TUF, and pretty much plans on having them lose, then dumping them to build up the new guys.

Also, a lot of TUF guys could go directly into the UFC, or have even fought in the UFC already.

And yes, of course Dana doesn't want boring fights, but I don't think he is doing the right thing. The key to getting entertaining fights won't necassarily come from firing good, but boring, fighters. Changing up the rules and such, or deducting purse money could, however.

I think he's turning it into the WWF.

You know that may be true but I do appreciate him working to make the sport more popular for all.

People can actually make a good living off of MMA and UFC now.

What'd Randy make last UFC? 225,000? That's 5 times what some people make in a year. Of course he is one of the best, but coming from the 10,000 the top fighters used to make, its alot.

I'd rather the new fans of MMA actually enjoy the sport for what it is. Educating fans would be more useful in the long run than trying to steal fans from other forms of entertainment through imitation.

They're trying to get away from being confused with WWE.

As you can see from the past, they took away the elaborate entrances with the fireworks and pyro like the WWE has to the more boxing-esqe entrances where they walk through the crowd.

That whole post UFC-52 Tito seemed more WWE than anything else. Calling out enemies, etc. They shouldnt let the fighters have the microphone unless being interviewed.
