I had this trick work on a 270 pound guy I was rolling with: His strength advantage was significant enough that when I sank the RNC he would just reach up and pull my hands off. I crossed my ankles, and he goes for the ankle lock. That's when I sank teh choke deep and squeezed. The gamble was that I could make him tap before he got the lock. It worked.

I imagine taht Abbott was significantly stronger than Yoshida, as well as less skilled. I call it a calculated risk that paid off.
And lo, Kano looked down upon the field and saw the multitudes. Amongst them were the disciples of Uesheba who were greatly vexed at his sayings. And Kano spake: "Do not be concerned with the mote in thy neighbor's eye, when verily thou hast a massive stick in thine ass".

any lock, including ankle, requires immobilsation of the limb, from the pictures shown, doing that while getting choked out would be quite a trick.

You can ankle lock people even if their feet aren't crossed at all, just sticking out. Gotta get them hooks in.

Either way, it's bad form. If you need the extra grip, figure four the midsection/body-triangle. (Unless you're not flexible, like me).

    Well, form-shmorm.

I work out with a guy who always crosses his ankles when going for RNC. He's got so much upper body control that you just don't get to them ankles.

And I know a guy who likes to leglock the leg that has a hook in. It's not a high% thing, but he's been pulling it off now and then.

I thought Pride was about winning and not about form.

Perhaps...I know that, when I apply A RNC, I do it at a point that, IF my ankles are crossed and he tries for a lock, he will be singing good night Irene.

But yes, on a whole, crossing ankles is NOT the best of ideas.

there is no danger to crossing the feet when you fight tank, tank has never displayed even the basics of submission skill, the only BJJ I ever say him do was a half guard while kimo was on top of him. other then that all I've seen from him is high school or college style wrestling.

Against a tried and true submission specialist you should think twice, but I don't even know if tank is flexable enough with that big gut to even go for a ankle lock.
