I am not in favour of additional moderation, at least not outside specific discussion forums marked as "serious discussion please" such as the history section (creating other areas like it may be a good idea, by the way).

What I am talking about is, well, self policing. I do know from first hand experience that many newbies get by without a reaming, as long as they do not say anything stupid, do not put themselves up as specialists without offering proof, do not try to set themselves up in a moral or martial high horse, and do not create an introductory thread.

I believe it is the duty of "well established members" (whatever that means this month) to enforce some minimum rules of behaviour regarding non stupid, non flaming newbies. That is all there is to it, really. I like this site, and I firmly believe any changes should be brought up by consensus, not heavy handed moderation.

Those members could do that by flaming people who flame non stupid newbies or, much better, by stopping a flaming session by saying hi to the newbie, explaining a bit of the site moderation policy, and answering any questions the newbie may have. The other posters will just follow the example, and the newbie will see this site is not about bashing "people who don´t belong", but about freedom of speech.

But I am afraid I have no idea on how to solve the thread deraling problem.
Sure if you have the time that's fucking great! My time is devoted to demoralizing and flaming the fakers and the REAL Bullshido artists. Not immature posters who are trying to jump on a bandwagon for whatever reason. Ignore what they say the same as you would a pile of crap in the park. For the moderators to intervene so much would also portray the site in a negative light. So far i havent seen any of this "panty flaming" hopefully it doesnt happen again.

The best way for people to get to know this site is to be able to interact with the other members. Noobs are noobs. They make mistakes, as do veterans. But no one wants to ask a serious question and have their ass handed to them for the effort. Like I said before, people come to this website expecting it to be as proffesional as a company, especially since alot of people on here are proffesional instructors. I for one was directed here by an online Encyclopedia, for example. Again, it is fun to haze and raz people you don't know from the protection of cyberspace sometimes, but if someone is legitimately trying to learn more about the martial arts, yelling at him or her to use the search function, when it might be the first time they had visited the site, is a great way to get them turned off, and potentially lulled in by someone more willing to answer them- like Ashida Kim or Commander Coal. This is an information site as much as it is an entertainment site. And like any site in general, it has to be "user friendly". One more time, people make mistakes, and no one likes to be thrashed for something they did by accident. I am fairly sure most of the instructors out there don't treat their students like they might people on these forums. When was the last time you remember your sensei or siffu calling people stupid, making obscene jokes, and making people feel like crap? When was the last time you asked a legitimate question, and the jerk made you feel stupid? Some people do deserve it, but some people don't. Indescriminant hazing is something people shouldn't have to be policed on, because being a member of these forums is a privilage, and being a mod or admin is a job.

A great deal of the flaming I have seen in my few months here have been performed on obvious fakes and the occasional new person with no actual martial arts experience. A few Jackie Chan movies or a serious intention to start does not give anyone a right to have their opinion hold the same weight as people who have spent 20yrs in martial arts.
A serious person with serious questions will be respected if they pose serious questions, or a new guy can use the resources on this site to help determine what is a legitimate martial art and the signs of bs.
People's opinions are not equal, if someone doesn't know anything and they come off pretending they do, they should be torched and never return. This is a martial arts forum, not a social circle for wannabes.

    Here's my request:

When someone asks a question that's been asked before, please don't just post "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!" and then flame them. Do a quick search yourself, if you care, post the link to one or two threads, tell them to look for the rest and then -- this is the complicated bit -- STOP POSTING ON THE THREAD.

If you can't do that, DON'T POST ON THE THREAD AT ALL. IT WON'T MAKE YOU SICK OR KILL YOUR MOM OR KICK YOUR DOG OR ANYTHING.

The ONLY person who gets to do STFU noobie to any ACTUAL noobie is Omega.

    Not gonna happen

Hey, I never said it was a paying job, just a job. There are lots of jobs out there that don't pay. Like the job Ashida Kim's mom gives me every night.

Do you think, however, that there might be something to what I said? Don't be an ass about it, please.

As I recall, Black Belt Magazine still defends George Dillman, and they have Meredith Gold in their Hall of Fame. Do you think they would cover any site that regularly says bad things about Dillman? Of course not. The fact is that most martial arts magazines are full of ****.

Who, for Pete’s sake! Is opposing science? In fact, we want MORE science by CRITICALLY ANALIZING the evidence-Connie Morris, Kansas State BOE (bolding and underlining part of original quote, red is my emphasis)
