I know this is probably the wrong place to ask, but what exactly is a throwdown, what does it involve, and when did it get started?

The throwdown is basically a big open mat session for anyone in the area to come in and spar/grapple/whatever. The primary goal is to put a reality check on your training, the secondary goal is to get lots of video footage so everyone on the site can make fun of us.

Well as for me being a taiji guy... i'm much more kung fu guy than tai chi guy, taiji tong long (tai chi praying mantis) is an external style with a lot of internal elements, though I have been doing straight up yang style and taiji chuen (palm) for about 2 years, so i can try and move slow enough for you to get the full taiji combat experience *winkwink*

Is there a lot of registration/signuf fee stuff to go through at the throwdown? I just need to know if one should show up early or around 1

On a crappy note, I dont' think I have any of the requisite equipment
Is there stuff for sale at the location in Berkeley?
If not, I'd be more than happy just two watch the action, maybe even just throw on a pair of gloves for some light stuf.
Anyhow i'll try and work something out.

It's free and there will be equipment you can borrow. You will need your own cup and mouthguard, however.

One of those plastic made-in-china cups should be easy to come by. Personally, I find they protect just fine...

You don't need a bunch of equipment, just bring a mouthgaurd and a cup. If you have boxing gloves, mma gloves, shinguards, etc., bring that as well, but the cup and mouthguard are essential (you can probably borrow the other stuff). Also, there isn't any fee as far as I am aware of.
