Those aren't the punches I'm talking about.

Looks like looping hooks to me. Haymakers. The ones I'm talking about resemble over hand punches. Igor does them but not like that. They come in much straighter than that.

Haymakers? Seriously? How does he make them work so well, then? Just drills them or what?

I think the movement everybody is talking about is seen in the straight punches. The Jabs and crosses, not the hooks and uppercuts.

When I had to hit focus mitts or spar in JKD, I got told I had a really strong punch, but that I had a tendency to not snap my fists back to guard my face. I had a bad habit of just leaving my hand hanging out there. It came from the lunge punches I had learned in Budo Taijutsu; they had more driving force with your bodyweight behind it rather than a snap. Watching Pride matches with Ice Cold I always thought his strikes looked similar. I'm ignorant of Russian styles beyond the leg locks that were blended into Shooto, so do they practice lunge punches with the rest of the jabs and crosses and other more boxing style punches? Or am I way off base?

It looks as if he stepped off the centerline and did some sort of clothesline hook, like the arm equivalent of the thai roundhouse to side of thigh-other leg thai roundhouse to front of thigh combo.

Look at his coordination of hip movement and weight shift. To me, those punches look like someone saying, "Defense be damned, I'm going to hit you as hard as effing possible -- even if it means leaving my centre-line wide open." But those shots are no fluke; he definitely trains them.

As far as when to use them goes . . . I haven't seen that fight, but if it were me, it would be when I had my opponent on the defensive. Personally, I like stuff like this for dealing with someone who moves to the side a lot. Also, when you think about the arm-span of a big guy (which I'm not), it's got to be somewhat overwhelming to have hard shots coming in from so far apart.

That gif looks like a similar punch Liddell threw in that video recently where the guy asks him to hit him in the arm. Very stiff, very wide and throws the bodyweight into the opponent.

Great if you're not too worried about being countered (like in a pure stand-up bout)
