Actually I'm friends with one person who has trained with Matt, and I've got to talk to Matt at least once. While Matt is a good coach and generally nice guy I don't think he has the proper mentality to step into the cage although I think he would win against some of the the lower mid card guys.
Go away I'm talking to myself -

He's 5'7" and weights 235, completely natural. Guy would probably have to decide on a weight he'd best be able to use his catch skills at and then bring that to bear against the typical BJJ weaknesses, as he is purported to be able to do well.
You're probably right about the mentality thing though, you look and read and listen and you just don't see "killer instinct" in him like you do in a Tito Ortiz or Chuck Liddell.
You could always try telling him that his opponent said, "Karl Gotch sucks!" or "Farmer Burns is dead, get over it!" to piss him off."The morning glory blooms for an hour. It differs not at heart from the giant pine, which lives for a thousand years." -

Farmer Burns may be dead to you and me, but he's alive and kicking during Matt's power walks. Ain't you ever read that article in Grappling. Come on man it's 2003, get with the program. Matt talks daily to Farmer Burns and the man that lives in his eyebrow.

Against any of the heavyweights? Put Furey up against someone like Couture, Mir or any of the up-and-coming Russians and he'd get killed. He might do all right in KOTC or Gladiator Challenge, but I'd have to see it to believe it.
"Go cry about it Vargas. Aren't you late for your shift at McDonald's?""I had once talked to Billy Conn, the boxer, about professionals versus amateurs - specifically street fighters. One had always heard rumors of champions being taken out by back-alley fighters. Conn was scornful. "Aw, it's like hitting a girl," he said. "They're nothing."

<John> I'd have to smack you sometime...Katana, on 540 kicks: "Hang from a ceiling fan with both hands. Flail your feet out and ask people to walk into you as you hit their face."
