Instruction varied greatly, especially when you take some the ranks into account. Some said not to lock out the joint, but when people keep telling you to go harder and faster, and you're only striking air... Eventually you will start locking the joint out, particularly on kicks if you're trying to snap them.
Not when your instructor waits for you to do it and almost breaks your arm to demonstrate that it's a bad idea. Which, as rediculous as that sounds, is something I think SHOULD be a part of instruction on a general level. "No, don't do this, it's a bad idea. Here's why."

Do you really think it's that easy to break someones arm when a punch is coming AT you?

Alhazred I don't think that's really necessary. In BJJ classes we don't say "keep your arms, or else this will happen" and snap it with an armbar. Similarly when doing drills in muay thai, we don't say "keep your guard up" and kick them in the face when the guard drops.

The main problem is they exhort you to go full power into the air.

On the front page he is complaining about people bashing him in the guestbook. Did any of you check it out? It looks like either he removed it or you need to register but alas I am too lazy to find out.

And in all my martial arts experience, I was always taught to not lock my arms out when I punch. They were so adamant about it, it kinda became habit, even as I do it harder and faster. You just have to work on that.

I do believe that is the case to my knowledge, though the totality of my experience with "kancho" comes from here:

Ha, that really is funny. Written backwards plus goukan ryu, and a founder who likes his Kancho.

Someone should bring a few Japanese tourists to his gym so they can burst out laughing uncontrollably.

I dunno...I'd be pretty scared of a style that claimed to rape other stylists:) Well...maybe not in this case
