I was going to point out both BatRonin's point about sub-jutsus, and also that in the old days, JuJitsu, Ju-jutsu, Yawara, whatever you want to call it was basically like Kung Fu in China, where everything was just a style of Jiu-Jitsu. The styles were denoted by school name (i.e.- Fusen Ryu... I've even seen translated texts with Judo being reffered to as Kodokan Ryu, which is pretty cool sounding).

That said, using the naming system set up back then with the Naginata Jitsu, Katana Jitsu, and so on... Wouldn't Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu be the art of gently fighting with Brazilians as your weapons?

You could walk around with a tiny Gracie in a pouch on your back, and if you came to a bridge with another guy that refused to let you pass, you'd both whip out your miniature Ricksons and go to friggin' town!

It'd be like friggin' Pokemon. "I choose you, Mata Leao!!"

Yawara and Jujutsu are synonymous.

Yawara is how you read the kanji JU, in Jujutsu and Judo, by itself.

And yes its a very lame name.

I had a great rant about this on Sherdog one time, because someone was making a boneheaded argument about Bas Rutten or Eddie Bravo creating a "new martial art" with their creative uses of BJJ or combinations of it with MT and whatever (in Bas' case). It had grown out of a "Did Maeda teach the Gracies Judo, and then they created all the subs that didn't involve the elbow?" discussion that was equally ignorant. I did a full history lesson, then said that "Even if Nog came out tomorrow and said 'I don't do BJJ, I do Sword of the Dancing Penis', it'd still BE BJJ... Which came from JUDO... Which came from JUJUTSU.... STOP THE MADNESS!!"

For a few months, there were tons of folks with "Blue Belt in SDP", "SDP Purple Belt", "Master of Sword of the Dancing Penis" and **** in their sigs. I felt loved.
