Basically in Italy there are (a few) traditional events which are nothing but a "No Holds Barred" version of sports practiced nowadays.
"Calcio Storico Fiorentino" (Historical Florentian Football) is the traditional equivalent of Soccer.
"Il Palio di Siena" (Siena "Grand Prix") is the traditional equivalent of a horse race. One rule only: the first horse win. (Notice that it's the horse, not the one who rides it, who can be whipped and trampled during the race with no exception).
"La Battaglia delle Arance" (Orange Battle) is another traditional event. People from all the country go there and massacre themeselves using orange fruits as thrown weapons (LOL). -
