the pullup movement starts at your shoulders and ends up with your back. Having stronger shoulder muscles means better hangtime, especially if you do handstand pushups against a wall, which may bring the back muscles into play, and if your friend did his overhead press behind the neck style, then he was right, for the same reasons.
Men's Health reviewed a whole bunch of infomercial abs products vs. a perfect form crunch, in terms of how much it engaged the entire muscle with the crunch being 100%, they found:35% ab swing, 63% 6 second abs, 64% abs scissor, 70% torso track, 96% perfect abs roller, 126% ab-one. There Is one thing out there better than a perfect form crunch, but they produced similar percentages from adding a weight plate held during a perfect form crunch. Stick with the basics.
So, you're saying that the military press will help with the initial movement (or early stage) of a pull up? That does make sense, and there is obviously some muscle crossover there, even if it is a different motion. I've just never noticed it, but then again it's sometimes really hard to tell what's really responsible for certain gains.
