All I'll say is that if it were me, I'd see an M.D. over a chiropractor no matter what the circumstances. This is based on lots of personal and professional experience, including a few horror stories. But, that's only one man's opinion.
Also, don't under estimate the efficacy of massage. It's a very effective modality. I suspect that if you're getting relief from chiropractic treatments, you'd probably get as good or better relief from massage, without the inherent risks. But, in my opinion, it should still only be supplemental to a proper evaluation/treatment by an M.D.
Good luck man. Back problems are a real bitch.

Hacks and quacks.
Although some people get a benifit and some new chiro's now work with real doctors in a pt/massage therapist kinda way.

I think there are studies that say that chiropractors can help with back pain. I recently read a magazine article which compared a bunch of different techniques vs back pain, though (acupuncture, chiropracty, some others), and the winner was the orthopedic surgeon.

I believe that there are chiropractors out there that really know what they're doing, but the're the exception, not the rule. But when it comes to injuries like the one you're talking about, doctors are pretty much in the same boat. See a physiotherapist first. These guys, in my opinion, have a much deeper level of knowledge and experience. However,
All this being said, I pretty much consider everyone's opinion worth hearing -- as long as you can put it in the context of other information. I'd seriously listen to what a chiro would have to say, but that wouldn't exactly be the end of my research.

Hate to dig up my own thread to answer a question, but: http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...=chiropractors
There is still dispute over if they help or not, who has the real chropracty and so on. Largely people agree that there are many frauds, but those who have been helped, feel that there are legitimate and very helpful chiropractors out there. I think the biggest warning sign of a poor/bullshido chiropractor is one who claims they can cure non-back related problems by adjusting your back. Stuffy nose? CRACK! You should be fine now. Bullshit.

Actually, it makes sense that people are retarded, or get heart attacks, because their spines are missaligned. I mean, look at worms and other spineless animals. All of them die eventually. Why? Because they don't even have a spine.

Chiropractic is great. The mainstream medical effort to try and kill it was horrid and thankfully unsuccessful. Unforunately, they've succeeded in other realms.
I would go the "holistic" route first and then result to cutting, burning, and poisining if that fails to respond.
