Hehhe. Itaikun is only partly correct. The japanese word "itai" can have different meanings depending on context.

I don't rely on them, and I consider myself pretty well versed in wrist locks

Isn't there a thread on when and how to use wristlocks on this board somewhere?

    Here's a summary of wristlocks:

    1) Wristlocks are not a full technique by themselves, they either start or end another technique or movement.

    2) A wristlock is easy to stop if the opponent is actively resisting, unless you do something first to distract them. I suggest you kick the guy in the balls.

    3) Wristlocks work best as a suprise and from a dominant position.

I can't disagree with you, really I think they're techniques of opportunity, if somebody presents you with a wrist then it should be bent, but I wouldn't go looking for a way to set one up

I can think of only one wrist lock where you couldn't be doing some kind of arm lock instead.

In Aikido, Nikkyu is the only wrist lock where you aren't also locking another joint. But once you slap on Nikkyu, you need to immediately move to another technique or lock, it's an opening. Otherwise, you are standing there and holding the guy's hand.

But we are going off topic, and I think there is another thread around here about ristlocks in the technique section.
