    Heel Hook Revelation

    So either this is a really sweet way to do a heel hook, or I am just reinforcing what a newb I am by not knowing this in the first place. Previously, when I went for a heel hook, if it was on my opponent's right leg, my left leg would swing over, but I never laced it under right next to my right foot to get a hook that allows me to stay on better during rolls. Huge newb mistake? Or is this just a question of choice?

    The more the limb is "immobilised" the better to put ANY lock/submission on it.
    Common sense.

    Lacing the leg over puts more pressure on your opponents knee. You can do this with a straight ankle lock as well to put sideways pressure on the knee. Whichever submission you do, when you put the leg over and then under you increase the likelyhood of a knee injury exponentially. This leg position does not allow your opponent to turn out easily.

    I was shown this way of applying leglocks by Oleg and Ruas who endorsed it highly.

    Those are the two guys that influenced my leglocks. Both of them are extremely brutal with them. You tap quickly and often.

    I do not claim to be a leglock expert, but IMHO those two guys are. Strangely they had 2 completely different methods of application but both emphasized the over and under interlocking of your outside leg.

    A few years ago I worked out for about 8 months with a sombo club. With my background in Judo, I was totally unprepared for any leg locks. I was amazed at how effective they were and how easily they were able to apply them on me (at least for the first few weeks). It reminded me of transitioning from wrestling to judo, and always exposing my arms in the beginning.

    For what it's worth, I was taught to always immobilize the leg.

    Same advice goes for toeholds. You gotta keep the leg bent and immobilized otherwise they can easily spin out.

    He had it, but fully cranked it anyway. Very uncool sportsmanship, in my opinion.
