    The Physical Body DVD

The Physical Body: Indian Wrestling And Physical Culture

I received an advance copy of this eagerly awaited DVD, eagerly awaited because I
have been following the authors journeys throughout asia and india for quite some time. The DVD is part documentary and part instructional following the workout routines and regimens of the Indian Wrestlers. Shot in India we get a rare glimpse into a world we rarely see outside of old books. Its wonderful seeing this world illuminated in real time.

Fans of Combat Conditioning, the work of Karl Gotch, extending into the work of Scott Sonnen with Clubbells, will know the debt owed to the old Hindu exercises. But its rare to actually see them done by wrestlers themselves in their native countries.

The DVD breaks down very cleanly into: introduction: setting up the template and backstory about kushti and the workout routines of the wrestlers, taking us to the first wrestling school where we see the routine being carried out, we also see several wrestling bouts which I loved. The third part moves us to a famous wrestling gym in Delhi, where they show us the old and new --New -- meaning the way the wrestlers are working these days which is close to our greco-roman, freestyle on mats. The contrast that is shows is worth the price of the DVD. The fourth part and my favorite isolates out one wrestlers workout and then breaks down each exercise and its variations, for fans of combat conditioning this is the part you will love, fifith part goes into swinging clubs for competition and exercise, sixth part goes into the very unique and unusual mallakhamb and rope mallakhamb, and I for one had never seen anything like this. Quite unusual and definitely unique and one of it, then it ends with a brief closing.

As you can see this is chock full of nifty details and runs a little over 60 minutes with bonus footage and a stills gallery, its well worth the money. Its good for anyone even slightly interested in this topic.

    I loved it.

The DVD is set to come out around May 20th or so, you can order directly from

I tried to put this into the reviews section where it belonged as it wrote it for that.

I would like it to be there but I couldnt get it to go through, could it be my browser?

Let me know. if the admins want to remove it they can.

Sorry if it came off crass.
