Belts can be useful at lower levels in large groups.

What I mean is in a large organization the Kyu (colored) belts lets others know more or less where you are training wise. Or to be more precise what you have been exposed to and are supposed to know.

Once some one is a Yudansha (black belt) it really doesn't mean anything. At this point it is what you know and how you move, not what color belt you have.

You should not have to wear a black belt for people to know you are at that level of training.

Once you are past the Kyu rank, belts don't mean ****.

I'm sorry I trip across it and hadn't found a reason for my snappy comments about belts.

Some gi grappling techniques use the belt as a grip.

...and it can also be used...as a hat. (1 Bonus point for getting this)

Initially belts were used to help the instructor(s) know which students knew which techniques and where a student was at in their learning progression.

Anymore though, belt systems are just another way people define themselves..."I'm a black belt in TKD", "I'm a purple belt in Karate"...

Belts seem to be more used for the following:

    1) Making money for the school (testing too often, or not testing enough)

    2) An outward projection of self-importance.

    3) A measure of social/class status.

    and my favorites

    4) They make a good handle to throw someone.

    5) A nice weapon for a choke.
