Well, not to split hairs here, but there are times when you could be on the ground having to deal with an opponent who is standing (or vice versa).

And yes, I guess "groundfighting" implies the skill of gaining positional control (via grappling) for the purposes of striking or defending against striking rather than applying or defending against a submission. And also learning how to get back on your feet if you hear your mommy calling.

Grappling is not striking. But may include striking in your technique. If I grab you, I am grappling. All throws are grappling.

If you find yourself rolling around on the ground and grappling, you are groundfighting. I believe this would include sitting in the mount punching your opponent.

example: Mantis is a grappling art (basically) It is not a groundfighting art.

Because you're obviously not interested in becoming a good fighter.

Hey dude cut him some slack.
    He's politely asking.
He hasn't been through the bullshido grinder yet.
But he's thinking about things and asking for advice.

I know. My post was a part of the bullshido grinder. It should get him interested and want to look into grappling just to spite the mean bullies here. It works quite well most of the time.

Well, that's why I created this thread. I am interested. Being the newbie that I am I just wasn't sure what route to investigate.

    Thanks, all.

All jokes aside, I'd suggest going and trying it _now_ rather than later. Take it from someone who's waited way too long for some of the same reasons you bring up and who now regrets it.

Wing Chun doesn't teach you how to fight. I think you need a real base before finding something to supplement it.
