Silat?

Of course, sports will normally take more emphasis when comp is around the corner.

Part of the problem seems to be is that sport MA tends to be boring because once you put the gloves on, outlaw major targets like throat, back of head, neck, and make it safe for sport, you remove most of the fighting aspects of the martial art, and everybody fights pretty much the same. All the styles start looking the same, and it's boring.

I guess what I should clarify is that it isn't just the 'styles' that look the same (because styles are stupid ... if people fight with a style they are totally predictible -- styles are for beginners). It's that the techniques are just basic kickboxing and a little bit of grappling if it's allowed. That's what's boring.

I trained with a Silat Guy - Steven Bentiez (sp) he is very good and practical with his training, some interesting little ground techniques as well which were added to my box of tricks.

I think it will largely depend on the instructor.

In all fairness, silat is a fortunate art in the sense that you can really tell the crap ones from the goods one pretty much easier than the other martial arts. Just bring along a more experienced martial artists along, especially those who do jujitsu, kali, arnis or TCMA background, if can't get anohter silat guy to go with you to help verify the authencity of the things they teach.
