Not really gimmick. Just a strategy/method of using guard. Like closed, butterfly, etc. Just different terminology. I saw the same thing being done before Bravo ever started using it.
If by 'gimmick' you think, a carefully marketed position in order to gain notoriety and name recognition in order to seperate yourself from the masses in no-gi work...you might also be correct.
I guess it depends on your perspective. I voted no. Nothing new here, just a 'reinvention' of sorts to the popular no-gi grappling market. -

Guy Who Pays the Bills and Gets the Death Threats Style: MMA (Retired)--
This is Eddie Bravo's claim to fame (aside from tapping Royler with a triangle), right? Any good books on it? After seeing Elvis (Schembri) use it in Pride I started fooling around with holding a foot up high on the top guy's back with my opposite hand and using my wrestling shoes to help maintain a grip.
I've never been able to do anything with it (mostly because I suck), but there have to be some good no-gi applications for it besides trying to go for a variation of an omoplata.
Does Eddie Bravo have instructional vids? -
