Purple Dragon Martial Arts Studio w/ instructor John McNabney

This place is right down the street from me. I'm planing on investigating it over the summer, but I just wanted to get the board's opinion, given the material on the website, if there are any tell-tale signs of a McDojo. I might have seen a couple, but... well, I'm not very experienced when it comes to figuring that out.

John McNabney is a Certified Second Generation Jeet Kune Do Instructor under First Generation Bruce Lee Student Jerry Poteet.

This is iffy.

Today, the martial arts are practiced for health and fitness, sport, law enforcement, spiritual benefits as well as for self-defense.

From the sound of this, there won't be much sparring.

Oh, hell no.

He is also, apparently, offering an RBSD system, which is a big turn off in my book.

Find somewhere else, a definate McDojo, I believe.

First of all Jerry Poteet is for real. He is one of Bruce Lee's first students.

That being said I've always had a problem with "Purple Dragon Studio offers instruction and training in Jeet Kune Do" This one walks the line that irritates me. I wouldn't say Mcdojo yet. Deserves investigation but might end up being a solid school.

Umm... hold on there. I don't see anything pointing to a McDojo (=greedy business practices). You propably mean bullshido, although I don't see anything pointing to that either. He teaches JKD, but says he's experienced in (kick)boxing and karate as well. There are some photos with guys in helmets and boxing gloves, so I'm guessing they don't just tickle eachother.

If he offers "authentic JKD" training, I'll say it's more probably a ploy to sucker people out of money than not, hence the McDojo. The "authentic JKD" training is quite the bullshido as well.

While he may have been Bruce Lee's student, he was NOT one of the guys certified to make instructors in JKD. That's NOT saying it's not a great school, just that any "authentic JKD" place has to have Dan Inosanto in the lineage somewhere.

I normally don't involve myself with converations like these but I have to step in and say WTF, without Inasanto no JKD, NOT, or is that just in Canada? So what you're telling me is Taki Kimura, Steve Golden, and others of the Original Nucleus don't count? There is always the the debate of JKD and JKD concepts, and I don't think anyone really knows the difference.


While Poteet did study with Bruce, one of Bruce's old students, Bob Bremer, told me he had the sign in sheets for those days, and Poteet is only on but a few of them.
