Actually, Tang Soo Do is just the pronounciation of the occupiers martial art karate. Same hanja different pronounciation. So anyone who did karate did Tang Soo Do... The Kwans were the style. Soo Bahk Do, as you said, was to sound more korean AND allowed a copyright , unlike Tang Soo Do.

Actually the Kwans were not the style, they were the names of the school. No one in the 50's and 60's went around saying I study Jidokwan. They would say there were from the Jidokwan or the Chungdokwan or Ohdokwan (kwan=school) They studied kong soo do, yudo, kumdo. The style name of Tang Soo Do was used with Lee, Won-kuk who disposed of it and allowed Whang Ki to use it for his Moo Duk Kwan school.
