    Brana Fighting System

Saw this while clicking on the Google links. This instructor teaches near Birmingham, AL. Found this bio on his site:

"Our head instructor, Sifu Kevin B. Smith is a 23 year veteran of the martial arts. His joy of teaching and dedication really shows through in his teaching. Sifu Smith has had training in many martial art systems and is certified in thirteen arts.

Here is a small portion of the martial arts that Sifu Smith has studied.

    • Jeet Kune Do
    • Wing Chun Kung-Fu
    • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
    • Muay Thai Kickboxing
    • Todo Extreamo Fighting System
    • Catch Wrestling
    • Indonesian Silat
    • Filipino Kali
    • Filipino Escrima
    • Filipino Arnis
    • Sayoc Kali
    • Braρa Fighting System (Sifu Smith's
    family system)

Sifu Smith used to compete regularly in competitions all around the southern states. He has had 316 competition fights and his record at the time of retiring stood at 316-0. Sifu Kevin B. Smith is proud of all of his accomplishments but he is most proud of his acceptance and induction into "The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame" on April 25th 1997. Sifu Smith was proud on this day for not only being inducted, but because his teacher and friend Sifu Edwin Pagan Garcia also presented him with his plaque and certificate."

Pretty impressive so far. 316 fights--undefeated. Hall of fame at 19..

I will try to get some more info.

    heh, didn't catch that.

I'm interested in this 316 wins thing...

I think Bob Thurman (old kickboxer back in the day) claimed over 200 wins as an amatuer...who knows...

On the plus side, they have students in guard wearing gloves, implying NHB.

On the down side, they fight with lightsabers/flares/glowsticks.

I like the fact that he chose to list Kali/Escrima/Arnis separately. I'm sure he has a legit reason for this. :new_Llol:

These are the qualifiers for The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame:

Associate Instructor of the Year, must be at least a 2nd degree black belt- with a minimum of 8 years of training and a 2nd degree black belt for at least 2- years, and be 18 years of age.

Instructor of the Year, must be at least a 3rd degree black belt with a- minimum - of fifteen years training and be a 3rd degree for at least 3 years, and is- over - 21 years of age.

Master Instructor of the Year, must be 5th degree black belt or above the- age - of 30 years, with at least 25 years of training.

Grandmaster of the Year, not less that 40 years of age and have been- training - for more than 30 years, unless he or she is an inheritor of a system and- have - documentation to prove such inheritance.

Master Weapons/Weapons Instructor, must have at least 10 years as a student- of - weapons instruction.

Competitor of the Year, Inductee's for Competitor of the Year will not apply- to - the above standards.
These are as of Jan 2003 so unless they have changed the criteria greatly his Hall of Fame induction is limited to:

    Associate Instructor of the Year,
    Master Weapons/Weapons Instructor, or
    Competitor of the Year

Given his 316 - 0 claim my money is on the Competitor of the Year.

I love the picture they have of Dan Inosanto. Everyone knows having a pic of Inosanto automatically legitimizes your system...

The system is made up of 3 phases. One of the phases is the Free-Movement Phase. The Free-Movement Phase makes up all techniques from a standing or vertical position. Another one of the phases is the Grappling Phase. The Grappling Phase makes up all techniques from the clinch type positions to fighting on the ground. And the other phase of training is our Weapons Phase. Our Weapons Phase makes up all the techniques dealing with weapons.
In fairness, if they teach what they claim to teach then they should provide decent training, but the head instructors credentials still appear exagerated. I have a hard time believing anyone can be 316 - 0 in competition. Then again, he says that he started training when he was 5 so is he counting kiddy competitions where he beat up the other six year olds? Just wondering. :5baby:
